Dr. Indira Nityanandam

Academician, Author, Editor, Translator

Dr. Indira Nityanandam, Principal (Retd.), Smt. S.R.Mehta Arts College, Ahmedabad, Director, Bharatiya Bhasha Sanskriti Sansthan, Gujarat Vidyapith, was Visiting Faculty at IIM (Ahmedabad) and  at EDI (Gandhinagar). She also teaches PG classes at the SAP Centre, Gujarat University and at St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad.

With more than 4 decades of teaching experience, she has written and presented papers at National and International Conferences, guides M.Phil. and PhD. scholars, has been a resource person at the Gujarat Judicial Academy and Advisor at the Gujarat State Text Book Board. Now she is on the Board at CN Angrezi Kendra, Member on the Board of Studies of St. Xavier’s Autonomous College, Trustee at Chaitanya School, Gandhinagar, Chair Person of  VTG  at the NGO Visamo. She has published 6 books and edited 8. Among her latest achievements is Altitudinis, a novel penned by ten authors and Varanasix  with 2 authors. Another recent feather to her cap is the publication of Translation Studies: Approaches and Practice co-edited by her and she has also edited a book on Amitav Ghosh. Often invited to deliver key-note addresses, chair sessions at seminars and conferences, is resource person at faculty development programmes, as well as orientation and refresher courses at KCG, she says that teaching is still a passion and her first love. Her main areas of interest include Translation Studies, ELT, Indian Writing in English and Dalit Literature. Believing that Translations between Indian Languages have to play a major role in bridging the increasing linguistic chasm in our multi-lingual country, she began by translating Tamil poetry into Gujarati with a Sahitya Akademi grant for the same. Having translated and published a collection of Tamil Dalit short stories into Gujarati, she is now translating a Tamil Dalit novel into Gujarati. Translating Narayan Desai’s Gandhi Katha has been one of her fulfilling and meaningful translations.
